Sonic Mania – SEGA looking to their roots to create a quality Sonic game?

Over the course of at least a year or so, SEGA has been talking about quality in their video games. About the lack of quality they’ve provided, and their “betrayal” to fans. About taking a new approach, and actually taking their time to create quality video games. And even creating surveys for fans to get their opinions.

I’ve been watching… and waiting… for SEGA to live up to their word and show us a new Sonic the Hedgehog game that isn’t a joke. Long time Sonic fans that grew up with the classics and watched Sonic fall into a downward spiral of glitchy, rushed, and half-baked games, can right now see a light at the end of this tunnel.

For Sonic the Hedgehog’s 25th Anniversary, this trailer has been released and reveals Sonic Mania—A brand new 2D platformer, which claims to be “going back”, going back to what made the blue hedgehog a gaming icon in the first place. SEGA teamed up with Christian Whitehead, Headcannon, and PagodaWest Games to develop Sonic Mania, which features new zones and remixed classic zones with not only Sonic, but also Knuckles, and Tails. Take a look:

It looks good. Actually good. Here’s hoping it really is.

Sonic Mania is set to release in Spring 2017 on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Sonic has had a few bright spots in an overall very bumpy ride with the likes of Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations. Many thought the franchise was back on track when those released, but it seemed as if that light was quelled after more sub-par releases after that. Such as Sonic Lost World, which was okay, but seemed as though the developers weren’t sure what to do with it. Then, Sonic Boom… well many of you know how that turned out (it was a mess).
This was all before SEGA addressed the issue of their bad quality video games and their desire to do better. This could be a new era for the company, but time will tell. I will remain cautiously optimistic.

Do you think SEGA will deliver and provide a quality title with Sonic Mania? And if so, do you think they will continue to produce good games in the future? Let us know what you think in the comments.
